What are Our Natural Resources? Students will be able to identify what a natural resource is and how they can be beneficial for you. This is will accomplished by making a personal shield of arms. 1-3

Introduction In earlier times, people did not have the technology to see beyond the horizon The apparently limitless nature of the world led people to believe that natural resources were endless, boundless, and inexhaustible The world population of humans has surged in the past couple of centuries Many people continue to treat nature’s gifts as endless, boundless, and inexhaustible 1-4

What is a Natural Resource? Not produced by humans Useful in our lives Useful function Energy forms Human ingenuity 1-5

What is a Natural Resource? USEFUL CHANGES Potential is not constant Not resources in earlier times Nuclear energy Gasoline Metal alloys Electricity 1-6

Soil Resources LAND AREA 2.26 billion acres (U.S.) Soil’s enemy is erosion Priorities for land use Food production Manufacturing Complex problem 1-7

Water Resources MANAGING WATER RESOURCES Earth’s surface is 70% water Water versus usable water Always traveling back to the sea 1-8

Water Resources WATER AS A SOURCE OF POWER Early source of power Carried logs Boats Waterwheels Every day Americans use 300 billion gallons 1-9

Water Resources CONTROL OF EXCESS RUNOFF Water that falls on land Streams Back to the sea Remains part of hydrologic cycle Potential natural resource 1-10

Fish and Wildlife Resources WILDLIFE AS A NATURAL RESOURCE Can reproduce itself Still of value Pleasure Meat Insect-destroying ability Revenue from hunting and fishing 1-11

Fish and Wildlife Resources WILDLIFE CONSERVATION Ecotourism Non-hunting public Observe wild creatures Preservation Threatened species Endangered Rare 1-12

Forest Resources 1607— Half our land area forested 70 percent of that area still forested One-third is noncommercial forest Two-thirds is usable for commercial forestry Farming Construction 1-13

Forest Resources MATURE FORESTS Trees start growing slowly Takes centuries Young forests Produce wood Wildlife populations Trees are renewable 1-14

ENERGY RESOURCES Sun Wind Coal Oil Natural gas 1-15

MINERALS Not as vital Still need conservation Vast undiscovered mineral reserves Exceed what we already discovered 1-16

RECREATIONAL RESOURCES Relaxing Inspirational Unspoiled nature Clean water to swim Unlittered hiking trails Clean parks to camp 1-17

Assignment You will need to choose 4 of the resources that we covered and explain the following on you shield of arms: – What is the resource name – What is that resource – Why is that resource important to you. – It must be colored and creative Resources we covered: – Forests, Soil, Water, Fish and wildlife, Sun, Wind, Coal, Oil, natural gas, Outdoor recreation, and minerals.
