SAB CMS Software and Physics Project HIP Geant4 activities A. Heikkinen, T. Lampén

SAB CMS Software and Physics Project HIP Geant4 activities  Aatos Heikkinen  SAB meeting,  Geant4 is a toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter  Its application areas include high energy physics and nuclear experiments, medical,  accelerator and space physics studies  LHC experiments using Geant3 in detector simulation are now strongly changing to Geant4 toolbox A.Heikkinen

SAB CMS Software and Physics Project HIP Geant4 team  Members in Geant4 collaboration: Aatos Heikkinen, Tapio Lampen  HIP representative at CB is Jorma Tuominiemi (TSB: Aatos Heikkinen)  Activity focused to medium energy hadronic physics modelling  In collaboration with: H.P. Wellisch (Geant4 hadronic physics coordinator),  N. Stepanov (Bertini cascade code development), A. Hektor Geant4 in cluster architecture)  Also several summer trainees have participated to Geant4 work A.Heikkinen

SAB CMS Software and Physics Project Key achievements  We have released a Bertini Intra Nuclear Cascade (INC) model (Geant4 5.0, January 2003)  Exitons, pre-equilibrium, nucleus explosion, fission, and evaporation are modelled  Particles treated: , , n, p, and nuclear isotopes (60~MeV - 10~GeV)  Currently only Geant4 model able to produce backscattering pions (see picture)  Strong interest among users (CERN, ESA, NASA) A.Heikkinen

SAB CMS Software and Physics Project p(597 MeV) + Pb   + (  =135 o ) + X A.Heikkinen

SAB CMS Software and Physics Project Activities in Geant4 community  STUK (Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland) –Invited talk of low energy applications –Strong interest for shielding and medical applications –STUK hired A. Hektor from our group for half year detector simulation project  Industry consulted –iXimaging (x-ray and gamma-ray imaging detector design) –Metorex (x-ray detector and spectral analysis) A.Heikkinen

SAB CMS Software and Physics Project Future plans  Additional development of medium energy hadronic physics -Performance tuning of current models -Development of new physics models  Student training -Providing interesting summer training opportunities with Geant4 and CMS related work -Providing thesis work subjects  Workshop -Strong interest among users -Planned for automn Productive collaboration with users in academy and industry A.Heikkinen
