Suyuan tells June, CD 1: “of course you can be prodigy, too…you can be best anything” (141). CM: This makes June feel like her mom is trying to control her. June is satisfied with adequacy, but her mother expects her to become the consummate musician. Transition: Suyuan’s friend Lindo also expects the best of her daughter, Waverly. Lead-in: Even after Waverly wins a chess tournament, Lindo criticizes her for losing too many pieces, and suggests, “Next time win more, lose less” (98). CM: This suggestion ignites anger within Waverly, since she knows more about chess than her mother. Rather than praise Waverly for her talent, Lindo simply raises her demands, decreeing the chess strategy her daughter should use. CS: The unrealistic expectations of these mothers cause lifelong conflicts and insecurity for their daughters.
