Place Value by Mrs. Sherwood Let’s think about what the position of the numeral means in a number, practice reading large numbers, write numbers in expanded notation (expanded form), and tell the place and the value of a numeral in any position in a number. Let’s get started!

Periods Billions Millions Thousands Ones H T O 5, 4 9, 2 1 6, 7

Reading Large Numbers When you see a large number to be read, start at the right hand side and think: ones, thousands, millions, billions. Then read the digits in each period and say the name of the period when you get to the comma. Try this one: 4,569,092,067

Let’s try a few more. 43,609,087,490 189,987,000,223 5,208,321,000

Expanded Notation When using expanded notation, we write the value of each digit. For example, a 6 in the ten billion place is worth 60,000,000,000. Let’s try it with this number: 4,590,432,721 = 4,000,000,000 + 500,000,000 + 90,000,000+ 400,000 +30,000 + 2,000 + 700 + 20 + 1.

Write these numbers in expanded form in your binder. 7,456,284,009 Now you try! Write these numbers in expanded form in your binder. 7,456,284,009 856,942,304 77,098,341,119

Check your work! 7,456,284,009 = 7,000,000,000 + 400,000,000 + 50,000,000 + 6,000,000 + 200,000 + 80,000 + 4,000 + 9

856,942,304 = 800,000,000 + 50,000,000 + 6,000,000 + 900,000 + 40,000 + 2,000 + 300 + 4

77,098,341,119 70,000,000,000 + 7,000,000,000 + 90,000,000 + 8,000,000 + 300,000 + 40,000 + 1,000 + 100 + 10 + 9

Place and Value Can you tell the name of the place and the value of the digit? For example: In the number 4,234,789 the red 4 is in the thousands place and it its value is 4,000.

Now you try! Name the place and value of each red digit. 405,237,694 The five is in the millions place and its value is 5,000,000. 35,897,479,502 The nine is in the ten millions place and its value is 90,000,000.

You did it!
