Pre-placement Meeting October 2015

Aim To clarify the role and responsibilities of the Mentor / Class teacher, working alongside the University of Gloucestershire, to support the best outcomes for students.

What we will cover… ●The nature of our partnership ●Overview of the taught course so far; ●Key dates and commitments for Placement 1; ●Accessing documents using elearn; ●The PDP; ●School Training File; ●Forms: lesson observations, mentor meetings, report forms; ●The role of the Link Tutor: visits and review points ●Intervention and support

Our Partnership and Ofsted Judging the quality of the ITE partnership Ofsted inspectors will evaluate: “…how well trainees are trained to be good or better teachers” ‘Trainees’ – this includes NQTs 2 Stage inspection – our stage 2 will take place before early December 2015.

Ensuring the best outcomes Through: ● The programme we provide with University and Schools/settings ● Accurate assessment of students ● Supporting students to become good or better teachers by the end of the course ● The impact their teaching has on the quality of learning of pupils

The course so far… An induction placement of 2 days in early September Professional Studies – behaviour, learning environment, safeguarding, intro to planning and formative assessment. Subject input in all core subjects and some foundation. (Subject Strengths identified) Starting to think about Assignment 1 preparation (Core subject focus)

Placement 1 Introductory period Starts Fri 12 th Oct until Oct break. Block weeks 1-3 2/11/15 – 20/11/15 Block weeks /11/15 – 18/12/15 (except Mon 7/12)

Commitments for Placement 1 (Full details in Placement 1 checklist) Discussion and review of targets in PDP Share policies and Medium Term planning 4 formal observations of teaching (group or whole class), 1 joint observation with Link Tutor Complete mid-point review between blocks Engage in professional dialogue / discussion Facilitate opportunities to observe best practice across the school Monitor files / school-based tasks Complete report form in the final week of placement and ed to by Friday 18 th

Progress across the placement School Experience handbook and Mentor portfolio will arrive with students on the first day Placement 1 section of the SE handbook Flexible weekly guidance provided – section 9 Placement 1 checklist Approx. 50% of their time teaching by end of 3 week block in November – whole class and groups Approx. 60% of their time teaching by end of 4 week block – whole class and groups Teaching should include PE and foundation subject strength

Documentation and Elearn Elearn is the new Partnership website where all documentation will be located for Mentors, Class Teachers and Link Tutors. No password is required. All documentation may be downloaded and completed electronically or printed and handwritten.

Planning requirements No Medium Term Plans to be written by students during placement 1 School MTPs to be shared before ½ term; student to read MTPs, research and note questions during ½ term Mentor/CT to meet with student by 4 th Nov to discuss school MTPs Student to plan lessons for 7 week block using school MTPs (Science and Foundation subjects) Student to plan English and Maths lessons from school unit plans for weeks 1-3 Student to write own English and Maths unit plans for final 4 weeks (2 weeks of English, 2 weeks of Maths)

Planning and Evaluation Every taught interaction should have a lesson plan (This may be the university format or an adapted version of the school planning format covering all aspects of the university document) Every taught lesson should be evaluated Students should be reflecting after each lesson on pupil learning and progress as well as their own teaching. By the 4 week block, students should be considering how their evaluation and assessments feed into the next learning opportunity.

Lesson observations Link tutor – 3; School (mentor/HT/CT) – 4; Agree a schedule, including time for feedback Make copy of lesson plan, a chair, all files available Complete lesson observation form (Form 2, 2 pages) Clearly identify strengths and areas for development Engage in professional dialogue – progress, targets Copy forms for student, mentor and Link Tutor.

Assessment of Students Informal feedback throughout the placement Readiness to commence form in the mid-point review Final report (must be received via by the last day of placement) Judged against the placement 1 level descriptors (see Elearn) 1 – Very good 2 – Good 3 –Requires Improvement 4 – Unsatisfactory – fails to meet the standards for this placement

Support during placement Assessment of the placement is evidence based. If a student is struggling, feedback from lesson observations should identify strengths but also identify ways to address any areas of concern.
