Mobilizing for War

Expanding the Military FDR increased the defense budget Passed the Selective Training and Service Act Many members of minority groups joined the service, but were forced to serve in separate units Many women served in non-combat positions as well

The Economy - FDR created the War Production Board to figure out which companies switched to war production (ex. Ford motor company began making airplanes) - U.S. spent 321 billion dollars to finance the war; 41% of that money from higher taxes

The Economy (cont.) Wartime ended the massive unemployment in the U.S. Provided new job opportunities for women and members of minority groups Thousands of people moved to northern industrial cities (Chicago, Detroit, etc.)
