WARM UP 10/4 1. What element has the atomic number of 11? 2. What period is N in? What group? 3. What chemical reaction makes energy for our body? 5. What % of our body is water? (approx) 6. What is a biomolecule? 7. Where is most of the water in our bodies found?

NOTES CH 2 10/ BALANCE OF FLUIDS

How water enters the body: 1. Liquids we drink 2. Foods we eat 3. From our cells

How water leaves the body: 1. Urine (kidneys) 2. Breathing (lungs) 3. Sweat (skin) 4. Feces (intestines)

+ Food – 3 1/2 cups a day from food - 2 cups lungs - 2 cups sweat - 6 cups urine Loss of 6 ½ cups of water a day (more if you exercise/ etc.) NEED TO DRINK 6-8 cups of water a day to maintain correct water balance

Fluid balance Having the water that enters our body = to the water that leaves **why vomiting and diarrhea can be dangerous – loose water faster than can replace Third world countries, dehydration major cause of death Loosing about 10% of body weight dangerous

Homeostasis Maintaining a relatively constant internal environment

FIGURE 26-6 Water loss ( not drinking water, sweat, diarrhea, hyperventilate..) Decrease total volume of water Decrease saliva Dry mouth, thirst Drink fluids and increase water homeostasis

Most water in our body is found in the intracellular fluid - water inside the cell 65%

Electrolytes Ions dissolved in water in our body : EX: Na, K, Am, Cl, bicarbonate, phosphate, sulfate

Dehydration Condition that results from excessive loss of body water Amount lost to sweat = about 1L/day

Why electrolytes lost? When decrease in water, too much concentration of ions. So body loses ions in urine to make a balance. (ions needed to make our body function right)

ADD** Alcohol = diuretic (makes you lose water) ADH – hormone in our body (produced by pituitary gland). Causes kidneys to take water from the urine, clean it and keep it in body.

Alcohol and dehydration Alcohol stops release of ADH by brain Kidneys don’t take water out of urine Urinate more often Become dehydrated Start to loose electrolytes Dehydration and elect. loss gives “cottonmouth”, headaches, etc. (hangover) **pop and caffeine increase dehydration! Need to drink water
