{ Phrases and Clauses; Complex Sentences Lesson 7

 Independent Clause  Has a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as a complete sentence  Also known as the “Main Clause”  Dependent Clauses:  Does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence.  Also known as a “Subordinate Clause” 2 Kinds of Clauses: Independent and Dependent Clauses

Examples:  The sun set an hour ago.  Even though it is a complete sentence, it is also an independent clause.  Jean Merril wrote The Pushcart War, and […]  […]Robert Solbert illustrated the book.  Both bullets are part of a complete sentence that contains 2 independent clauses. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE

Examples:  That I wanted  What she saw  Since most plants die without light DEPENDENT CLAUSE Words like “before”, “because”, “that”, “what”, “while”, and “since” often signals the beginning of a DEPENDENT clause. The meaning of a Dependent clause is only complete when attached to an independent clause.

 A group of words that work together.  Unlike a Clause, a phrase does not have both a subject and a predicate Phrases

 Sentence that is made up of an INDEPENDENT CLAUSE and a DEPENDENT CLAUSE  A SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION is used to show how dependent clauses are related to independent clauses Complex Sentences

Subordinating Conjunctions show how dependent clauses are related to independent clauses.

Examples Identify the DEPENDENT and INDEPENDENT Clauses in the following sentences

Treason Someone who betrays his or her country.

Disown Breaking your connection with someone or something

Ordinary Not special or different in any aspect.

Convince Persuading someone that what you are saying is truth

Defeatist Expecting, accepting, or resigning to failure

Suit Something that is appropriate for you

Rejected Someone or something that has been turned down

Shades of Meaning Sometimes closely related words seem to be interchangeable. No two words mean EXACTLY the same thing Where they are different is within their Shades of Meaning. Knowing the end of the race was near, Sarah _____________ to the finish line. How do we know what word to fill the blank with?

Context Clues Use the text of something that is being read in order to better identify the shades of meaning among related words. I watched curiously as she _________ her dinner WITHOUT Context, completing this sentence with the appropriate word is impossible. EX:
