 Independent Clause  Has a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as a complete sentence  Also known as the “Main Clause”  Dependent Clauses:  Does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence.  Also known as a “Subordinate Clause” 2 Kinds of Clauses: Independent and Dependent Clauses

Examples:  The sun set an hour ago.  Even though it is a complete sentence, it is also an independent clause.  Jean Merril wrote The Pushcart War, and […]  […]Robert Solbert illustrated the book.  Both bullets are part of a complete sentence that contains 2 independent clauses. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE

Examples:  That I wanted  What she saw  Since most plants die without light DEPENDENT CLAUSE Words like “before”, “because”, “that”, “what”, “while”, and “since” often signals the beginning of a DEPENDENT clause. The meaning of a Dependent clause is only complete when attached to an independent clause.

Shades of Meaning Sometimes closely related words seem to be interchangeable. No two words mean EXACTLY the same thing Where they are different is within their Shades of Meaning. Knowing the end of the race was near, Sarah _____________ to the finish line. How do we know what word to fill the blank with?

Context Clues Use the text of something that is being read in order to better identify the shades of meaning among related words. I watched curiously as she _________ her dinner WITHOUT Context, completing this sentence with the appropriate word is impossible. EX:
