BELL RINGER 2/6/2013  Include date, question and answer on your bell ringer!  Include date, question and answer on your bell ringer! **Earth Science CROSSWORD Due!**  What are the 4 major spheres of the Earth?  Geosphere (AKA: Lithosphere)  Atmosphere  Biosphere  Hydrosphere

“A Way To Find Where You Are on the GLOBE!”

Latitude and Longitude Rap   0c1idtn3e8 0c1idtn3e8

Globes  Model of Earth  Good for viewing how continents and oceans really are.  Bad because they don’t show enough detail to give directions

Maps  Flat representation of Earth’s surface  Good for showing detail and directions  Bad because it distorts the appearance of the continents

Short Latitude/Longitude Video   0c1idtn3e8 0c1idtn3e8

Latitude & Longitude Coordinates Imaginary lines that make it easy to find a location on a map.Imaginary lines that make it easy to find a location on a map.

Latitude

A Sphere may be cut in Half Horizontally Creating 2 Hemispheres. The Dividing Line

The Imaginary Dividing Line is Called the Equator Equator - 0° Latitude

Northern & Southern Hemispheres Latitude lines above the equator are called north latitude (in the northern hemisphere) Those below the equator are called south latitude. (Southern Hemisphere)

Remembering Latitude  1)The horizontal lines are parallels of latitude.  2) They look like the rungs on a ladder (the part you step on).  3) LAT is FLAT!!!

Latitude  Gives the location of a place north or south of the equator measured from 0° to 90°

Latitude TTTThe North Pole is 90° North Latitude. TTTThe equator is at 0° latitude.

LONGITUDELONGITUDELONGITUDELONGITUDE “Things That Make You Go HMMMMM?”

Longitude  Measurement of distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian.

If a Sphere is Cut in Half Vertically, the Western & Eastern Hemispheres are Created The Dividing Line

The Imaginary Dividing Line is Called the Prime Meridian Prime Meridian 0° Longitude Prime Meridian

 The prime meridian goes through Greenwich, England at 0° Longitude

Eastern & Western Hemispheres  Longitude meridians to the left of the prime meridian are called west longitude.  They are in the western hemisphere.  Those to the right of the prime meridian are called east longitude.  They are in the eastern hemisphere

Remembering Longitude Longitude meridians are all long. They do not change in size.Longitude meridians are all long. They do not change in size. CONVERGE at poles!CONVERGE at poles!

Steps 1.Check whether it’s in the northern or southern hemisphere. 2.Determine its latitude. 3.Check whether it’s in the eastern or western hemisphere. 4.Determine its longitude.

Now you’re ready to practice latitude & longitude on your own! It’s All About Latitude, Longitude Baby!
