Latitude and Longitude

Latitude and Longitude is one way of expressing absolute location. Houston, TX - They are imaginary lines that circle the globe.

Latitude! 0° 23.5 °N 23.5 °S Remember LAT, lay FLAT.

Latitude! Also known as “parallels” …because they run parallel to each other.

Latitude! Equator - 0° Divides the Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Longitude! Go up and down, from North Pole to South Pole.

Longitude! Also known as “meridians” … like the Prime Meridian.

Longitude! Divides the Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres. Prime Meridian - 0°

How do we use latitude and longitude to find a place?

Practice… What continent is at 60°N and 120°W?

Practice… What continent is at 30°S and 150°E?

33° N, 45 ° E 37° N, 105° W 18° S, 127° E
