Organizing the Globe A globe is a scale model of the Earth Useful for looking at the entire planet or large areas of land or water

Grid Lines circle the globe east-west and north- south Lines are called latitude and longitude Latitude (parallels)= east-west direction from equator Longitude (meridians)= north-south direction from the Prime Meridian Where these points intersect (coordinates) helps us find location of places on a globe/map

Lines of Longitude

Latitude and Longitude Together

Measuring Latitude and Longitude Distances are measured in degrees – Each degree = 60 minutes Latitude ranges from 0° (the equator) to 90° in either north or south – North Pole = 90°N – South Pole = 90°S

Measuring Latitude and Longitude Longitude ranges from 0° on the Prime Meridian to 180° on a meridian in the Pacific Ocean in either east or west direction

Hemisphere The equator divides the Earth in half – North of the equator is called the Northern Hemisphere – South of the equator is called the Southern Hemisphere The Prime Meridian also divides the Earth in half – East of the Prime Meridian is the Eastern Hemisphere – West of the Prime Meridian is the Western Hemisphere

Hemispheres

Continents and Oceans Earth is made up of seven continents – North America, South America, Europe, Asia (largest), Africa, Australia and Antarctica (smallest) Earth is made up of five oceans – Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, Southern
