Assignment 2 The Female Group

Group (8): Natalia Nawrocka Teresa Barry Fiona Leheny Ciara Kerrigan Catherine Byrne Dearbhail Kirwan Renata Lisauske Emer O’Neill

Should we cancel Xmas this year?

How did it feel in room 1? Easier due to the setup We formed a circle Better for the group, smaller room, more intimate

How did it feel in room 2? More logistical organization Informal, casual setting Asymmetrical, levels, less structure We got roles assigned

What were the techniques we used and how did we come up with the techniques? Six Thinking Hats – general consensus after one person proposed it; recently done PMI – one of the simplest, structuring all the ideas, weeding out a few CAF – most interesting ideas; good order after simpler techniques OPV - since we already have gone through some ideas MOST EFFECTIVE: CAF, but thanks to having STH and PMI before LEAST EFFECTIVE: PMI – almost repeated STH, no new ideas

Room 1: (first.5hr) Six Thinking hats

Blue hat: - Agreed on order of hats Red hat: -3 to cancel vs. 5 to keep Yellow hat: -save money for us -Time for study -Take away all the stress -Less traffic -No extra weight put on -Healthier liver (alcohol and food) Black hat: -No presents -No family time -Not seeing your friends from far away -Revenue (airports/airlines/shops) -Waste of resource and already prepared stock Red hat: -2 to cancel vs. 6 to keep Green hat: -Time off but without Christmas -Making gifts instead of buying gifts -More time off for clerks -Combine with NYE White hat: -Cancel the celebration on the 25 th -Logistics around company plans and holidays; school Christmas holidays -Management of stock in shops -Focusing on Irish Xmas Decision: Keeping Christmas, in the less commercial variation, to capture the idea and spirituality of it; allow the holidays and spend time with friends, give to others as oppose to spend time on buying

Room 1: (first.5hr) PMI

POSITIVES: -Less commercialism -Less stress and less pressure -Hard time for homeless people is not a case anymore -Taking out the religion aspect -Time to study MINUSES: -Depressing (as a nice and charming time in long winter, a break in awaiting summer) -Even less revenue in the recession time -Nothing to look forward to -No family and friends time -No time off to rest -No extra time for study -The employers may make us work more -No Santa (for kids) -Shops open INTERESTING: -Time for charity -Move Christmas to other times -Non-monetary presents -Impact from re-organizing the religion processes and tradition -Pines saved from being cut down -Less robberies

Room 2: (first.5hr) CAF (Consider all factors)

Chosen ~10 from all group Less abandoned pets after Xmas Using Xmas to lift the spirits of sick people More job losses, Xmas contracts lost 25 th would feel very different, since people are taken out of habit Losing the ability to even out the spending in retail (since there’s usually a post- Xmas drop) How to execute the decision of canceling Xmas? Less of waste (deco, food) Getting gifts we wouldn’t have bought ourselves otherwise Canceling Xmas: which days? Which traditions? Also corporate events and parties? Saving electricity and other resources; health and safety Less charity events that accumulate over Xmas Saving pines and turkeys What about SALES?!

Room 2: (first.5hr) Other people’s views

Santa No reason for existence Holiday for additional year Depression and alcoholizm more time with Ms Clause Doesn’t have to live up to expectations Waste of all the preps already done Less Time to spend on preps next year

Children No presents this year No pressure when comparing gifts with other kids Good time to break the bad news about the existence of Santa Kids don’t have the incentive to behave well Yet another long, winter days when kids are bored at home

Mommies Less tasks to complete, less stress Less preparations No tears, no family gathering Feeling bad for Xmas

Catholic Priest Worried about the religious continuity Prevent the ENTIRE thing from being canceled and keeping the religious part of it Less money collected Less stress, less messes, more time off Removal of the commercial part Focusing on church

Homeless Less depression Less dinners and gathering Less charity

Mr Pennys Xmas jumpers – storage for next y Less money Less double to pay Extra time for sales Exporting sock

5 things to make Xmas better Still have it, but a “slimmed down” version of it, focusing on spirituality Moving the date to the 30 th Dec and create one big festive season Focus on charity, engaging people from different religions, repurpose religious estate We keep the religious part of Xmas for people who want it (since some people are still gonna go ahead and do it; see if the Xmas spirit prevails) Even and less spikey sales and revenue trend
