USING IPADS IN THE PRIMARY GRADES Ways to Foster Communication, Collaboration and Creativity

COLLINS BIG CAT IT WAS A COLD, DARK NIGHT Students can read through the story themselves or have the story read to them. Then use the Story Creator section to determine students' understanding of the story... Create slides to show the beginning, middle, end Create a slide about how the main character was feeling Create a slide about other animals the hedgehog may have encountered on his journey This is an open-ended activty so there are many possibilites.

STORY KIT Found in app store under iphone only Used to create e-books ( text, photos, drawing and recording of voice) ~ First few times have create a paper draft and then transfer to Story Kit during publishing stage ~ When using photos from the web, have parent volunteers sit with students as they search, talk about copyright of pictures and how to tell what you can use ~ At some point, students feel comfortable enough to create right in the e-book. ~ can share a PDF version with parents through .

POPPLET Popplet is a tool for creating idea webs or mindmaps. *There are many application for this app, brainstorms, story maps, organizing and sharing learning, among others. *The image can be saved to the camera roll and ed to parents. After Reading a Biography In the discovery center children took a picture and labelled it. Then wrote adjectives to describe the object. Finally they wrote what it reminds them of and an “I wonder” about it. From the Discovery Center.

EDUCREATIONS grade/ /?s=qlkwh7&ref=app The example is a group math project to first find out how many students are in first grade, and then the total number of students in the school. You can see how the children used another app, Base Ten Blocks Math, as a tool to support their computation and then used a screenshot in their final product. Each group needed to make a plan to collect and compile the data. They had to build cooperative group skills to make sure each member played a role. We enjoyed the task so much, we shared our presentations and collected data from the other schools in the district and found a total of students in the whole district. Educreations is an interactive whiteboard app that can be used for any subject to write, draw, record and explain learning.

PIC STITCH AND TYPIC/TYPIC KIDS Pic Stitch and Pic Collage are apps that allow you to combine multiple photos in a framed collage. Typic and Typic Kids allow you to add more framing and text to your pic stitch collages. They can be used to make posters, share learning and newsletters. Newsletters Began as a teacher lead activity and slowly release responsibility to students Jobs included: photographers, collage creators and writers Pic Collage Pic Collage is a similar app with less advertising.

SHOW ME Can be used for any subject to write, draw, record and explain learning. At first, students create a paper draft and then move it into the digital. As their skills progress, can work in app directly. The example is a biography of a community worker that matched our SS unit.

FLIPAGRAM dZdvG Make slideshows using photos and add voice or music published students Small Moment stories in this format took pictures of their drawings and recorded voice to match illustration can easily share with parents through or embedding on a class webpage

IMOVIE Can be used to showcase learning at the end of unit and share it with others Students write script, rehearse to practice reading it fluently, record Example is 1st graders sharing bus loop rules that they have written with the rest of the school When visiting website, please scroll to the very bottom of the page to access the movie.

linklink2 Seesaw is a digital portfolio. Students can capture their learning with… Photos Video Drawing tools Text Audio recordings to share with parents. Parents and teachers can “like” and comment with text or audio recording. Parents access their child’s work through a personalized QR code or approval from a invite. Comments and posts are approved by the teacher. Seesaw is a way to share and track student work throughout the year.
