Interpretation of this poem This poem describes the feeling of returning home after long-time departure from the hometown. The poet left hometown in his early childhood years. 50 years later, when he went back home, although he still can spoke the hometown accent, his hairs got grey and the elder hometown fellow could't recognize him. That is why they all smilingly asked him: where do you come from?

Background information About the author and the text: Peter Hamill: He is successful American journalist. About the text: This text is based on “Yellow Ribbon”, a story written in the 1960’s. And this story was made into a Japanese movie in 1977 in which the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree” became quite popular in the United States.

The time of the writing The 1960’s –70’s was a very trying time for the American people, as the country was deeply troubled by its involvement in the Vietnam War. It was a time when such traditional values as human sympathy, understanding, trust and love seemed to be losing out. Through the experience of a former prisoner and his journey with a group of young people, the story seems to express a strong desire for “going home”, where such good old values are to be found again.

Florida: Florida: the "Sunshine State" (FL) Florida was named by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in He called the region "La Florida", roughly translated as Land of the Flowers. He probably chose this name because he was impressed by the many colorful flowers. Florida is one of the leading tourist states in the United States. Great stretches of sandy beaches and a warm, sunny climate make Florida a year-round vacationland. Major attractions include Disney World, Miami Beach, the Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys. Tourists may also visit historic sites that date back to the Spanish explorers.

New Jersey : the "Garden State" (NJ) It is a state to the south of New York. New Jersey is a state of industrial cities and towns, but also of glistening beaches and popular summer resorts. It is one of the great coastal playgrounds of the United States. Atlantic City is one of the most well-known resorts, and it is the capital city of New Jersey. Howard Johnson’s The first turnpike restaurant in the United States was opened in 1940 by Howard Johnson's on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Johnson pioneered the new convenience food concept of processing and pre-portioning food in company- operated central plants and shipping the food to restaurants for final preparation and cooking to insure high quality standardized service.

Howard Johnson’s Each restaurant is topped with a bright orange roof so the traveler could immediately recognize the restaurant. This has become a beacon to travelers as Howard Johnson's is known for quality food at reasonable prices and with the added lure of ice cream in 28 flavors.
