DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management D4C21 - aims Foster the formation of a new, diverse community with a common reference framework and shared understanding of theoretical concepts, cultures, methods and languages Stimulate new ways of design thinking, able to meet the challenges of designing for 21 st century society Support leading edge design research that is self- reflective, socially aware, economically enterprising and internationally significant

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management D4C21 – proposals 129 proposals 21 cluster awards

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management D4C21 - future October 2005 clusters conference November 2005 first research call 2006/7 possible 2 nd research call

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Focus of Design Performance Cluster Design growing in importance to UK companies as we reposition ourselves in the value stream Very little attention has been paid to managing the performance of the design process Different design communities have their own ideas, approaches, concepts etc.

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Focus of Cluster The overall aim of the cluster is to provide a platform to facilitate the sharing, consolidation and promotion of activities in design performance research and practice.

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Aims & Objectives Bring together researchers from diverse communities who can really lead the field in design performance at an international level. Develop a research agenda, along with priorities and groupings to take the key research issues forward. Start groupings of collaborative activity to tackle key research issues and form innovative research partnerships. Encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas, concepts, frameworks and approaches. Create a dialogue between designers, artists, engineers, architects, social scientists, etc. Involve industry in these key discussions. Disseminate information to the wider community.

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Planned Activity Workshop 1 – report on current activity and emerging themes Workshop 2 – development of themes and research agenda. SWOT analysis. Workshop 3 – research challenges, agenda and priorities Workshop 4 – mini-conference; presentation of research proposals Summer school Website Course materials

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Key Actions Identify overlaps with other clusters and start dialogue. Identify international experts and encourage dialogue. Invite speakers from industry to talk about challenges of design management. Investigate the needs of users. Organise workshops as the key forum for discussion. Organise a PhD summer school and encouraging exchanges. Attend the Design in the 21 st Century Conference in Autumn 2005

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Deliverables & Outcomes Website/shared workspace Research agenda New course materials Minimum 2 research proposals addressing key priorities Special edition of Journal of Research in Engineering Design – on Design Performance Report from the international workshop

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Exercises – Research Themes Individually write down 5 research questions you think would be worth asking under the Design Performance banner Can we cluster them? Choose to join one group (just for today) and work together to look at what information we would like to have that would help us develop a research proposal in this area

DMEM Design, Manufacture & Eng. Management Exercises – Cluster organisation How can we keep communication going between meetings? Do you think a summer school is a worthwhile exercise? If so what should we include? Do we have teaching materials that we could share relating to design performance? If so should we? And how?
