ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES/ ORGANIC GARDENING An elective designed to change the way you view the world and live your life!

What can I expect to learn about? There are so many environmental issues in the world that the possibilities are endless! But, here are a few examples: Fossil fuel consumption Global Warming Overpopulation Renewable energies Habitat destruction Environmental engineering (green building) Water crisis Pollution Documentary viewing (The Cove, Planet in Peril, Human Footprint) Organic farming vs. contemporary farming (petrochemical consumption) The list is endless and constantly changing!!!

What will I do in the UMS Organic Garden? You will learn how to grow your own food without the use of synthetic (man-made) pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers. You will grow, harvest and eat your own food! You will then take this knowledge and apply it to your home life and share your knowledge with friends and family!

Will I get to do any projects? ABSOLUTELY! We will utilize technology by creating Powerpoint projects to present to the class and other classes! Some of the topics we have presented on: Renewable energies Historical environmental leaders National parks Bay Area restoration projects Landfills Current events Deforestation Endangered species Students are always welcome to request projects about environmental issues they find interesting!

What sort of environmental leadership opportunities are there? GREAT QUESTION! The ES class runs the “In-class Plastic/Aluminum Recycling Program” every Friday. Opportunities on the rise: School-wide paper towel composting. School-wide printer cartridge recycling. GOT ANY GOOD IDEAS????

Why is it important that I choose Environmental Studies as my elective? Here’s the scoop: As human population continues to grow and as economic growth is driven by fossil fuel consumption, we continue to put our planet and its natural resources at risk. Come learn about what you can do to ensure a healthy planet for your future. BECAUSE YOU ARE THE FUTURE!
