AGENDA Poll audience– experience with virtual reality? Specifically Second Life? Basics of Project Healthcare Facility Orientation Challenges New Ideas Suggestions for use & how to collaborate with SUNY Ulster Discussion & Questions
POLL QUESTIONS Does anyone have experience with virtual learning environments? Does anyone have experience specifically with Second Life?
BASICS OF THE PROJECT Provides educators a way to engage students in the practice and development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills outside of the clinical setting Provides a safe space for nursing students to practice in an interactive setting Development of SUNY Medical Center Provide students with a free virtual learning environment where multiple learning experiences can occur
SUNY Medical Center This is our healthcare facility. There are 4 different wings, Emergency Room, Medical, Surgical, and Labor and Delivery. Each building is a different wing.

CHALLENGES Island was hacked—out of commission for 6 months Had to rebuild hospital Had Island (land) issues If equipment was not available had to build Time to train people to ‘build’ in Second Life Second Life updated and changed the way in which you ‘build’ and ‘buy’
CHALLENGES What can be done with technology—not gameware Deciding what is important for students to learn How to best utilize this technology Role Play vs. Developing Sim
NEW IDEAS Role Play vs. Developing Sim Students will be the nurse and patient avatars for role play Students playing the role of patient will provide different perspective In order to develop patient for Sim would be massive work in Second Life—better to have student avatars be the patient ‘Fake’ Patients in Second Life have limited use More opportunities in Second Life if designing a role playing learning activity
SUGGESTED USES & COLLABORATION Suggested Uses: Role Play Simulation Discussions/Debriefings Any SUNY Nursing programs interested in collaborating with SUNY Ulster? Start in Fall 2015 Please contact me if you are interested!
