1-5 MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING INTEGERS MS. BATTAGLIA – ALGEBRA 1 CP OBJECTIVE: MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE WITH INTEGERS AND DECIMALS, SIMPLIFY EXPRESSIONS WITH EXPONENTS, EVALUATE EXPRESSIONS.

WARM UP Evaluate a – b + c for a = - 2, b = 3, c = - 4

WORK WITH A PARTNER During a space shuttle’s first stage of return to Earth, it descends about 3.5 mi/min (write this as – 3.5 mi/min). To find how far the shuttle descends in 10 min, you need to find (-3.5)(10). 1)Did the shuttle’s altitude increase or decrease? 2)Which phrase better describes descending 35 mi? Why? a) A change in altitude of 35 mi b) A change in altitude of -35 mi 3) Is the product (-3.5)(10) equal to 35 or -35?

GENERALIZE… Is the product of a positive and a negative number positive or negative? Is the quotient of a positive and a negative number positive or negative? Is the product or quotient of two negative numbers positive or negative?
