K-2 iPad Math Apps By Kelsey Moser and Sydney Munce

The iPad math apps we will be looking at are: DreamBox Splash Math Maths Adventures Counting Pieces

DreamBox  Allows for personalized learning in which students are able to move at their own pace.  Students are able to work at their own level and work on mastering the concepts that they individually need.  “The bottom line that I want to emphasize is: let’s keep learning fun for younger kids. Childhood should be a time of exploration and discovery. And what could be better than to combine fun with serious learning? This is what we’re doing here at DreamBox, and every time I see a child enjoy our product, I am happy for at least two reasons: this child is having fun and he/she is also learning something useful. I wish my mother had this product when I was a child…” --Developer of DreamBox  YouTube YouTube

 DreamBox DreamBox

Splash Math  Interactive math app for every skill and grade level.  Games and rewards motivate children to learn, practice and improve their math scores.  Available on computers, iPads, Chromebooks, and in a Classroom Edition for the teacher.  “Splash Math is great because as you get things correct it increases in complexity — so it continues to challenge even those learners that are ready to move on.” Kristi Meeuwse Teacher, Drayton Hall Elementary School, Charleston, SC  YouTube YouTube

 Splash Math Splash Math

Math Adventures  At Math Adventures, they believe:  Everyone can learn mathematics  Playing educationally rich games and apps improves understanding  Learning math should be fun and exciting, a rewarding adventure  Games like the ones offered on Math Adventures are great time fillers for when kids finish work early, or for during indoor recess.  “We develop games and apps that focus on the key concepts that need to be fully understood to progress and succeed in mathematics. Our apps range from learning to count up to understanding and using fractions and decimals, with each game or app focusing on one key concept. Our growing varieties of games, apps, resources and advice are research based and classroom tested to make sure they help children learn.”

Math Manipulative—Number Pieces  “Number pieces help students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students use the pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, regroup, add, subtract, multiply, and divide.”  Features of the app  Add and manipulate numbers (ones, tens, hundreds)  Join pieces in groups of 10 or break them apart  Use drawing tool to label representations and show understanding  mathlearningcenter.org  YouTube YouTube
