What are two serious health risks a teen mother might have physically if she were to be pregnant vs a woman who was 25?

A teen mother does not have the capability to adequately nourish the fetus. The children of adolescents are more likely to be born prematurely and 50% more likely to be low-birth weight babies. The Baby

The Baby What does it mean to be premature? What health issues might a premature baby have? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsFT1xEIHzM

The Baby Teenagers often receive less adequate prenatal care. As they grow, the children of adolescent mothers tend to suffer poorer health.

The Baby Children born to mothers age 15 and younger are two times more likely to become victims of child abuse/neglect. Only 77% of children born to adolescent mothers complete high school.

The Teen Mom The pressure from society can be very harsh on the health of a teenage mother. The worst of the effects constitute lack of education and employment opportunities.

The Teen Mom A teenage girl may succumb to intense pressure and pain during delivery, which her body may not be able to bear. Teenage mothers who consume alcohol during pregnancy may deliver babies with congenital defects like facial abnormalities and mental retardation.

The Teen Mom Some teenage mothers view the infant as unwanted and decide to abandon him. Some feel good about their motherhood but do not have enough maturity and experience to bring the child up properly.

The Cost Parents can count on spending close to $50 per week ($2,448 per year) on diapers, formula and baby food alone. The average bill for doctors’ fees and hospital charges runs around $9,700 for a normal delivery and roughly $12,500 for a cesarean section (up to nearly $300,000 if complications occur).

The Cost The average middle-income family will spend roughly $12,000 on child-related expenses in their baby’s first year of life. By age two, parents are up to more than $12,500 per year.

How might having a baby as a teen impact your ability to reach the goals you identified at the beginning of this lesson? What can you do now to prevent you from becoming a teen parent?
