CLOTHES AND AJECTIVES

Adjectives are used to describe a word For example: a little dress a yellow t-shirt

In English, adjectives go before the word they describe For example: a blue jumper In French, most adjectives go after the word they describe For example: un pull bleu

OK so far?

There’s another difference between French and English adjectives You remember that French words are either masculine (le or un words) or feminine (la or une words) Can you think of 2 examples of clothes that are masculine and 2 that are feminine? un T-shirt un pantalon une jupe une chemise

Well, in French the adjective will change according to whether the word they describe is masculine or feminine I’ll show you what I mean Un pull bleu – une jupe bleue Can you see the difference? That’s right! When the word is feminine, you need to add an extra “e” at the end of the adjective

Let’s practise! a green shirt -une chemise ……une chemise verte a black skirt - une jupe noireune jupe …..

Still with me so far?

Let’s learn some new adjectives!!! grand petit long court joli big small l o n g short prettypretty

Let’s practise! a short skirt?une jupe courte a short t-shirt ? ? ? ? un t-shirt court a green hat un chapeau vert a grey jumper un pull gris a grey shirt une chemise grise

Now, what if the adjective already has a “e” at the end? Can you think of some colours in French that finish with an “e”? That’s right! rouge jaune orange rose So what happens when these adjectives are used to describe a feminine word?

Do we add an second “e”? NO!!! We just leave it as it is! For example: Une jupe rouge (a red skirt) Un pull rouge (a red jumper)

Let’s practise!! an orange hat ? ? ? ? ? un chapeau orange an orange skirt une jupe orange pink shortsun short rose A red shirt une chemise rouge yellow trousersun pantalon jaune

Careful!! A couple of colours don’t follow any rules!! Marron never changes, whether the word it describes is feminine or masculine it stays the same brown trousers a brown skirt un pantalon marron une jupe marron Blanc turns into blanche when used with a feminine word a white T-shirt a white shirt un T-shirt blanc une jupe blanche

Long turns into longue when used with a feminine word Don’t forget! To recap a long shirt une longue chemise a white skirt une jupe blanche a brown skirt une jupe marron

You remember I told you at the beginning that in French most adjectives go after the word they describe? Well, as you can guess, some go before! Here they are: grand big petit long joli small long pretty You have to remember them!

Let’s practise! a pretty skirt big trousers a long t-shirt a small hat une jolie jupe un grand pantalon un long T-shirt un petit chapeau

Let’s recap everything!!!! a big shirt a white T-shirt a brown skirt a long skirt a small hat a blue shirt a green jumper red trousers une chemise bleue un pull vert une longue jupe un pantalon rouge un t-shirt blanc un petit chapeau une grande chemise une jupe marron
