User-centered design When designing, always think from the view point of the user. Site visits and informal question and answer sessions.

Cost savings -- usability Telephone dialing -- saved 0.15 seconds which resulted in a savings of $1,000,000 yearly Redesigning input forms saved money. Older forms took 1 hour to correct errors. A computer computer saved money by making sign-ons quicker.

Usability slogans Your best guess User is always right (humility) User is not always right Users are not designers Designers are not users Less is more - fewer options

Cost savings -- usability IBM reported that sales went up 400 percent with an easier to navigate site. Decreases training time. FED-EX “As part of the redesign, we brought a lot of features to the home page that had been buried three clicks in…we’ve seen a 300% increase in its usage.”

Safety -- usability Three mile island was the result of engineers lacking information about an open valve because of a poorly designed interface.

Quick Prototyping example Design a touch-screen hamburger order system. Requirements: The system will allow users to order hamburgers with the touch screen. Customer orders (e.g., cheese, mustard) may be ordered. Customers can order one or many hamburgers. The Screen will display the total amount due.
