SEDM 5820 Course Orientation, Fall 2012 Ann Morrison, Ph.D.

SEDM 5820 Purpose of SEDM 5820 Assessment of literacy skills of young, struggling readers Evaluation of student strengths and needs Design and provide effective and engaging instruction Nonpurpose of SEDM 5820 Reading instruction for students with severe needs Reading instruction more typical of that found in the general education setting

In-Class Rule #1, if you aren’t comfortable, you won’t learn as much. So… If you are hungry, eat I bring a kettle and tea, coffee, etc. You may want to bring a cup-o- whatever If you need to attend to a personal matter, please do so outside of the classroom If you are uncomfortable sitting, stand up, stretch, do what will make you feel better If you need to use the washroom, please do Unless there is a problem, we begin on time Use of computers or ipads is not allowed unless it is on an ACCESS Accommodation form

Field Experience Begins in weeks Ends in weeks No more than 3 hours per visit Should largely be spent observing reading instruction and teaching small groups or 1-1, also instructing case study student Done in a general education K, 1 st, 2 nd, or 3 rd grade classroom Includes doing a case study Hours must be signed off by a host teacher on every visit

Why This Class is Among Your Most Important… Because it is a prerequisite for SED 4200 which is really great Because Dr. Morrison says it is Because you get to play reading games Because only 11% of children who do not read at grade level by the end of grade 1 will ever read at grade level (Cunningham & Stanovich, 1989).
