What is the Zodiac Constellation? PROJECT 4: ZODIAC ILLUSTRATION

OUR FIRST ILLUSTRATION! Like all of our previous projects, there will be a process to follow, and a problem to solve. However, much of this project will be about personal expression and EFFORT. Just like in a traditional art class, you will be graded on your ability to follow directions and apply effort into the final product. You must begin to show that you are learning something!

STEP 1. CHOOSE YOUR ZODIAC You challenge for this illustration will be to take YOUR zodiac constellation (based on your birthday) and create a personal work of art. The zodiac you choose will be based on what month you were born in! If you do not like your own zodiac, you may chose another as long as you fully complete the graphic organizer. Refer to the zodiac chart ( on the Project 4 page of the class blog ) if you don’t know what yours is!

-Aries -Taurus -Gemini -Cancer -Leo -Virgo -Libra -Scorpio -Sagittarius -Capricorn -Aquarius -Pisces

STEP 2. CREATE A COLLAGE OF REFERENCE IMAGES Illustrators pride themselves in being able to draw in many different styles. It is your job to pick out quality references and use them as a foundation for your own personal work of art. Pinterest is LOADED with great references! It is through observing the style of other artists that we find our own personal style. We are not COPYING. We are using their style as a model (reference) for our own work. NO TRACING WILL BE ALLOWED. You CANNOT have the good sketch paper until you complete step 1 and 2!

STEP 3. A FULLY RENDERED DRAWING / ROUGH DRAFT After choosing your zodiac and completing your reference sheet, your task will be to create a complete drawing on sketch paper. You are encouraged to use references! References help ground your work and give you a better idea of what you’re trying to draw! It MUST : Be hand drawn Have a Foreground and Background – Middleground is optional. Fully rendered – shadows, shading, FULL COLOR, and DEPTH. May only have 5 colors – refer to your color scheme notes! Y ou may use your references as a basis for your drawing. However, It must not be identical, and you MUST add your own personality to your drawing. A page of thumbnail sketches will be worth 25 bonus points !

STEP 4. FULLY DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION Just like with the Shoe Ad, you will take a picture of your drawing and use it as a foundation in Photoshop. Your final products will all look different. However, it must show effort and that time was put into it. The quality of your final illustration will determine half your grade for this grading period! It MUST: Be either 18” x 24” (portrait orientation) or 24” x 18” (landscape orientation) May only use 5 colors Have a Foreground and Background. Middleground is optional. Be FULLY DIGITAL.

TODAY’S EXIT TICKET With the instruction document open, complete your requirements worksheet. When done, turn in up front!
