Signed Rationals
What are signed rationals? Signed rationals are rational numbers with negative and positive signs. To solve signed rational problems: Follow the rules for solving fractions Then follow the integer rules
Example 1 Get common denominators Change the problem to addition Subtract the numerators & take the sign of the greater absolute value.
Example 2 Get common denominators Subtract the numerators & take the sign of the greater absolute value
Example 3 Multiply across (-5(-3)=12, and 6(8)=48) Same signs, answer is positive Reduce the fraction
Example 4 Change mixed numbers to improper fractions Multiply by the reciprocal Multiplying by different signs means your answer will by negative & reduce the fraction.
