AIM: What is Mass Movement? Do Now: What factors do you think cause the land to move suddenly or fall apart on the surface of the Earth (cause a mass movement).

*Mass Movements shape the landscapes on Earth Mass Movement- the transfer of rock and soil down slope due to gravity *Mass Movements shape the landscapes on Earth

Triggers (causes) of Mass Movement A) Water Makes the soil/rock loose (over saturated)

B) Oversteepend slopes Material falls off steep slopes (people make the land too steep) C) Earth Quakes dislodges or move large amounts of rock

D) Removal of Vegetation roots hold together the soil.

II. Types of Mass Movement Classified by their speed and type of material that is moving A. Rockfalls rock fragments move through the air Rock fall car B) Slides movement of rock/material in contact with the surface. Landslides Japan landslide

C) Slumps slow downward movement of material causing a curved appearance.

D) Mudflow E) Earthflows Move quickly Occurs after/during heavy rains or rapid snow melt E) Earthflows Move slowly Occurs on hillsides in wet regions

III. Preventing Mass Movement What do people do to prevent damage from mass movements? construct fences build walls put up signs Rock fall fence (high energy)

Closure: - Take a “Types of Mass Movement” worksheet from the back top bin. You have 10 minutes to complete both side and then we will go over the worksheet.
