Adobe InDesign Tri Fold Brochure

Create a Tri Fold Document InDesign > File > New Document The gutter is the space placed between columns to add breath or white space. It is normally twice the margin in size (width) The margin is 5mm

Getting started Choose (reset) a workspace layout. Click Window > Workspace Use Tool Hints to help you know what different tools are for (click Window > Utilities > Tool hints)

Toolbar Click the double arrows to expand toolbar Preview button Frame tool (click and hold to see more options)

Add an Image Different methods Draw a frame then drag image from folder on top, or copy image, draw a frame, right click > Paste into

Pages Window & A-Master Ensure the Pages window is showing (Window > Pages) Click the Pages tab to open the window. A-Master is the master page – what you put here appears on the other pages This image is based on the A-Master page A master page is a special page where you can set a basic layout and standard page features. When the master page is changed, the pages linked to the master will update accordingly

Creating B-Master Either: Drag the A-Master icon onto the new page icon, or Right click A-Master > select New Master (B-Master can be based on A-Master too), or Click the options menu (top right) and select New Master

Applying B-Master Double click B-Master in the Pages panel. Change the content of B-Master To apply B-Master, e.g. to page 2, right click Page 2 in the Pages panel, select Apply Master to Pages and select B-Master Master pages (A-Master, B-Master, C-Master, etc.) can be created and applied to different pages

Applying master pages by dragging You can drag a master page onto the document pages to apply the master. E.g. in the example opposite there are 5 pages. Master Page (None) has been dragged onto page 1. Master Page A-Master has been dragged onto page 2. B-Master has been dragged onto pages 3 to 5

Creating a Master from a Page Pages can also be dragged into the Master section to create new master pages.

Changing Size and Cropping Images Images fit inside a Frame (container). The image can be moved inside the Frame: – Move the mouse over the image and single click the circle in the middle – Click and drag anywhere on the image to move it inside the frame Frame Image boundary (frame crops off this area). You can also drag these to scale the image Frame You can also drag out the corners of the image boundary to scale up/down the image

Resizing images To scale up or down an image: – Click on the image anywhere except the middle to ensure the image and frame are selected. – Make sure Auto-Fit is selected on the tool properties window (along the top to the right)

Resizing the frame (cropping) The Frame can be resized without resizing the image (cropping the image): – Click off the image to ensure it is deselected. – Make sure Auto-Fit is not selected – Click anywhere on the image except the circle in the middle. This ensure the frame not the image is selected – Drag the sides or corners of the frame to crop/un-crop the image Further information on working on graphics: Adobe TVhttp://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign-cs6/working-with-graphics/ Adobe TVhttp://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign-cs6/working-with-graphics/

Structured Approach is Best 1.Collect sources 2.Sketch/plan design/layout 3.Create the master page(s) 4.Place content (File > Place or drag and drop) 5.Create styles 6.Edit content

Collecting sources You should plan your publication – Blumind ( is a “mind map” application to plan ideas – Work out what will go on each page, then sub-topics.

Collecting sources Using the Blumind mind map as a guide, collect text and images and places these in a SOURCES folder You could create SOURCES folder for each page.

Collecting Sources Look at different ideas to help you develop your own ideas E.g. templates from

Sketches Small thumbnail sketches to think up ideas:

Create the master pages Create your master pages and basic layout (no content yet) Add some headings (these can be changed later) to help mark out where the content goes. Use the Blumind map to guide you which pages headings go on. Page 4Page 5Page 6

Place content Click File > Place Multi select all the sources and click Place (to place the content of the sources folder onto InDesign one by one)

Text wrapping Placing text over images isn’t the best way Try adapting the flow of text around images Click on Window > Text Wrap Select the image and choose a text wrap option, e.g.

Create styles Select some text and edit the styles using the toolbars and menus Character toolbar: Paragraph toolbar: The tools include leading, tracking, drop caps, hyphenation, number of columns, and more. Some tools, e.g. hyphenate, appear on both tool bars. Paragraph styles apply to whole paragraphs. Character styles apply to selections.

Apply/Edit the styles Select the text you have styled On the paragraph styles (to open use the Window menu > Styles > Paragraph styles. window click the New Style button Click and name the style You can then apply the style top any other text by clicking on the text, then selecting the style from the menu.
