Complete assessments Appropriate assessment tools can provide valuable insight and data to help you: Identify your skills and strengths Confirm your interests and preferences Clarify career and job objectives Develop accurate descriptions to use in your resume and at interviews Improve your product knowledge !

Define career/job objectives Write clearly positioned objectives based on accurate data about yourself and your job market/career field. Identify the “fit”—this drives your communication and marketing strategies State objectives in terms of what you want what you offer

Write your resume Your resume is your marketing brochure which introduces you and your skills to people and organizations. Create, write and edit your resume to reflect your objective Use appropriate format in hard and soft copy versions

Develop correspondence and written collateral Your written material may also include: Cover letters (various types) Courtesy letters and notes Reference lists Bio Business cards Networking profile Application forms… All in both hard and soft copy versions

Practice your two minute drill/verbal collateral The two minute drill is a powerful verbal presentation where you confidently state who you are, what you offer and what you want from the listener. Personalize the script for different audiences and situations Variations include the 30-second elevator speech, the telephone introduction and the job objective statement

Make a network list Capture all the data about those people who can assist you in achieving your new career objective. Develop the list starting with the people you already know, eventually to include the key decision-makers and hiring managers you will need to contact. Incorporate your network list into your marketing strategy.

Research your target list Your target list of organizations to contact should be based on your career objective, job and personal criteria, and thorough market research. “Qualifying” your targets will reveal their priority needs and your potential fit Always identify your hiring manager !

Implement your marketing strategy Design AND implement a systematic marketing plan Base your marketing strategy on target lists, networking and research Track your activities and progress as you contact potential employers Apply your time management and personal organization skills daily Best if worked on a project basis

For employment interviews aim to secure an offer by demonstrating your fit to the job requirements, the value you bring and your enthusiasm for the organization’s work

Prepare for negotiation With a clear understanding of the value you bring to the employer, you can negotiate to achieve and enhance an attractive job offer which meets your career objective Focus on securing a win-win employment agreement
