The main idea of a story tells what the whole story is about. Why do stories have sentences other than the main idea sentence? The other sentences are details. They tell you more about the main idea. They also make the story more fun to read. All the details add up to the main idea. detail + detail + details = main idea = 12 The 3,4, and 5 are like details. They add up to the main idea. The main idea is like 12. It is bigger than the details. It is made up of many smaller parts.

Read the story below. Draw a line under the main idea. Do you sing in the bathtub? Do you sing in the car? Here’s how you can become a singing star! You can go to a store. Someone will play music while you sing a song. Then the people there will make a recording of your song. You can take it home and surprise your friends!

The main idea of the story is a sentence about becoming a singing star. All the other sentences are details. They tell you how you can become a star. Write the details on the lines below.
