India and China

1. Population  Population density- how many people live in one area  Most populated countries in the world: –China: 1.3 billion people –India: 1.2 billion people –Overpopulation: more people than a country can sustain –Most live in cities

Population in China

2. Problems with overpopulation  Food shortages  Unequal distribution of water  ENORMOUS amount of air and water pollution from: –Cars –Industrial waste –Biomass fuel used for cooking –350, ,000 people die every year (just in China) from air/water pollution

Air pollution

Overpopulation in India

Quick Write  What do you thing are some viable governmental solutions to China’s and India’s overpopulation problem? –Hint: Think diplomatically and realistically…you can’t kill people

3. Ganges River- India  In India, the most sacred and important river is the Ganges River  Hindus believe the river cleanses and purifies their bodies of disease  Incredibly polluted

Ganges River Pollution

4. Yangtze River- China  Longest river in Asia- largest water source  Divides north and south China, where land and climate is very different  Source of irrigation, fishing, hydroelectricity, etc.

5. Problems with pollution  Pollution- both rivers are HEAVILY polluted from: –Large scale industrial development (factories dumping chemicals and stuff into river) –Agricultural runoff –Poor waste management –Deforestation- burning down forests –Rapid urbanization

6. Flooding  Natural causes: monsoons, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.  Man-made causes: cutting down trees (no roots to absorb extra water), poorly built dams  Results of flooding: death, spread of disease, displaced people, destroyed homes/cities, landslides, etc.  Good: fertilizes soil (sometimes)  edu-filter=LxYDxnZFAF3OTqL54BW2nQ edu-filter=LxYDxnZFAF3OTqL54BW2nQ edu-filter=LxYDxnZFAF3OTqL54BW2nQ

8. Hinduism beliefs  Karma- Hindu belief that what you do in this life will effect your next life  Reincarnation- Hindu belief that the soul is ‘reborn’ over and over  Your karma effects what place in life you have once you are reincarnated –If you’re a bad person, you’ll have a terrible next life

9. Caste System in India  People separated into groups based on their jobs  Practice started 2,000 years ago  Hereditary groupings- people born into a caste system  could never leave it or move to another group  Based on Hinduism and the belief in reincarnation
