February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 1 Chamber Tasks Coordination Presented by A. René Raffray UCSD With contributions from J. Blanchard and the HAPL Chamber and Materials Community HAPL Meeting Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, GA February 5-6, 2004

HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 2 Outline Coordination effort Strategy Overall goals for path to laser fusion energy Where do the chamber tasks fit in? Milestones to help achieve overall goals Organizing the CTC

February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 3 Coordination Effort The chamber tasks cover: -Armor/First wall -Blanket -System Coordination of tasks to help meet overall program goals -Agree on chamber program milestones to support overall HAPL plan for laser fusion energy -Make sure chamber tasks and schedule help meet overall chamber milestones -Longer term process with our First Wall Battle Plan as initial step -Common basis for experiments, design and analysis -Promote regular communication and interaction among participants

February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 4 Chamber Tasks Strategy Although IFE operation is highly cyclic, only the armor experiences large temperature transient -Focus limited laser IFE R&D resources on key IFE-specific armor/first wall issues -Make the most of information from the MFE design and R&D effort on blanket Focus the resources on the materials with the highest probability of success within the proposed time frame -Tungsten as front runner armor material -Ferritic steel as structural material. Armor/FW Go/No-Go and Critical Issues (1)Viable Material Structures (2)Helium and Hydrogen Isotope Diffusion. (3)Ablation (ions & X-rays including surface roughening) (4)Thermomechanical Fatigue and Fracture Toughness (5)Thermophysical Properties (including irradiation effects) Other Issues to be addressed later depending on blanket and system include: (6) Need for Barrier Coating (7) Corrosion, Mass Transport and Compatibility (8)Reaction and Release Under Accident Scenarios

The Path to develop Laser Fusion Energy (courtesy of John Sethian) Phase II Validate science & technology Phase III Engineering Test Facility operating  2020  Full size laser: 2.4 MJ, 60 laser lines  Optimize targets for high yield  Develop materials and components.   MW net electricity Phase I: Basic fusion science & technology Ignition Physics Validation MJ target implosions (NIF) Calibrated 3D simulations Target design & Physics 2D/3D simulations 1-30 kJ laser-target expts Full Scale Components Power plant laser beamline Target fab/injection facility Power Plant design HAPL Krypton fluoride laser Diode pumped solid state laser Target fabrication & injection Final optics Chambers materials/design

February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 6 Proposed Chamber Program Milestones in Support of Overall Development Path for Laser Fusion Energy Chamber Program Milestones Credible case that dry wall is viable for laser IFE for Phase II Complete study of wider range of W/FS types and downselect for further multi-effect testing 2014 Path to develop Laser Fusion Energy Phase I: Basic Fusion Science & Technology Phase II: Full Scale Components (IRE) Phase III: ETF Select best armor/FW/chamber unit for ETF and start fabrication and final qualification testing (Also for chamber test modules) Armor/FW/chamber ready for ETF + at least one chamber test module

February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 7 How to Organize Chamber Tasks to Help Make the Chamber Milestones Happen? Need to organize schedule and milestones for tasks addressing the critical issues

February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 8 Several Possible Blanket Concepts from MFE

February 5-6, 2004 HAPL meeting, G.Tech. 9 Organizing Chamber Tasks Coordination CTC document -Chamber tasks plan including milestones -Common materials data base (properties) for analysis -Design & analysis guidelines -Protocol for testing Regular Communication -Conference calls ( every ~6 weeks) -Meetings (as part of regular HAPL meeting or arranged separately) -“Kick off meeting proposed 2-3 weeks from now to discuss CTC document being circulated (Feb. 19 or 26 at UCSD proposed?) Help pose and discuss questions with overall program view, e.g. -Best use of ETF for addressing chamber issues -Other facility for integrated testing (w/o neutrons) -How dependent are we on an external neutron irradiation facility (e.g. IFMIF)?
