Take a sheet of paper and make a paper hat.

How do we get from European Exploration to Imperialism leading to the outbreak of WWI? Well, that is what our standards are asking us to do.

So today…

We will travel through time by about 200 years!

Time Traveler Hat So easy to make!

Colony A territory ruled by another nation, usually one far away

Colonization A system by which a country maintains colonies outside its borders. Exploitation, maintenance, acquisition, and expansion of colonies in one territory by people from another territory. Unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous population.

Primary Reasons for Colonialism Occurred in the late 1800’s Competition for raw materials, a market for their products, and cheap labor The Industrial Revolution created a great demand for low-cost raw materials and profitable markets to sell their goods

These motives prompted European powers to… Expand in to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East By the late 1800’s most of the world had been divided by the Europeans into colonial powers Between , a handful of European countries seized over 25% of the world’s population

Turn to page 330 in your textbook and find the map: Categorize the possessions as quickly as you can!

Colonialism of Africa

What happened in the 200 or so years that made all this colonialism happen? There were several factors But the BIG ONE for us was…

Industrial Revolution Results in terms of ECONOMIC changes: Expansion of world trade Factory system Mass production of goods Industrial capitalism Increased standard of living unemployment

Imperialism The practice of one country’s controlling the government and economy of another country or territory.

Nationalism Strong pride in one’s nation or ethnic group
