WARM UP #3 4/18 Write down at least 5 vocab words that this picture is showing:

LEARNING TARGET I can * SHOW 1 – 5 how well you feel you understand food web target ….

TODAY Engage “who do you agree with” NOTES #3 Explore Activity / assignment (group/pairs) Exit

LAST WEEK WE LEARNED ABOUT THE FOOD WEB. WHAT IS THE FOOD WEB SHOWING? What starts the energy for the food web? How do animals take food and turn it into energy for its body?

“WHO DO YOU AGREE WITH?” Read through each student’s response to the question. Write down who you agree with. Find someone opposite side of the room. Discuss.

Ch 15 Notes #3 4/18 Food Energy

*All food energy first starts with the SUN Plants use light energy from the sun to make food - PHOTOSYNTHESIS Happens in CHLOROPLASTS Plants make their own food inside themselves – AUTOTROPHS

PHOTOSYNTHESIS FORMULA:

HOW DOES ENERGY GET PASSED ON? An animal will eat the plants and get the energy from it.

Then that animal gets eaten by another animal and gets its food energy Animals need to eat food - HETEROTROPHS

HOW DO HUMANS GET THE ENERGY? We eat the plants directly or we eat an animal (chicken, pig, cow, fish, etc)

HOW MUCH OF THE ENERGY IS PASSED ON? Only 10% each time it gets eaten! (what is stored in the organism)

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE THE FOOD GETS INTO US? Chaning food to energy – CELLULAR RESPIRATION Happens in: mitochondria Use energy for: growth, running organs, movement, storing it for later

CELLULAR RESPIRATION FORMULA:

EXPLORING THE FORMULAS: Must get into a group with someone who DID NOT have the same answers as you in your “WHO DO YOU AGREE WITH”. Can be 2 or 3 people.

EXIT TICKET DO NOT USE ANY NOTES 1. Give the formula for photosynthesis 2. Give the formula for cellular respiration

CELLULAR RESPIRATION – process of changing food to energy Oxygen + glucose  carbon dioxide + water + energy O 2 + C 6 H 12 O  CO 2 + H 2 O + energy (ATP) OPPOSITE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS!

THINK Do plants go through cellular respiration? What use energy for? grow, make fruit, roots, flowers, etc.

The things we breathe out, plants need and the thing that plants make, we need Once cannot live without the other!!!!

MAKE FORMULA CARDS FOLD A PAPER IN HALF 3 TIMES (makes 8 CARDS) AND ON EACH CARD WRITE: CO2 O2 C6H12O6 Energy H2O ---  Cellular respiration photosynthesis

FILL IN DIAGRAM 1.Sun energy 2.Plant 3.Carbon dioxide 4.Oxygen 5. Eats plant - sugar 6.Water 7.Water 8.animal

Why important to us? It is where all energy for living things starts It puts oxygen into the air for us to breathe

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight ---  glucose (food) + oxygen FORMULA CO 2 + H 2 O ----sun energy  C 6 H 12 O 12 + O 2
