REVISIONS: BODY PARAGRAPHS

EFFECTIVE EVIDENCE 1.) To convince others to take your stance, good persuasive writers incorporate evidence from their research.  Facts  Statistics  Ratios  Survey results  Expert quotes 2.) But writers, can’t just throw in ANY evidence. Good writers ask:  Does this evidence connect to my topic?  Does this evidence support my stance?  Is this evidence powerful?

EFFECTIVE EVIDENCE 3.) Good writers lead their audience into evidence by using transitions to give credit to their sources as well as provide some background information to their audience.  Transitions to Consider:  According to ______,  For example, …  For instance, …  __________ says…  __________ reported…  __________ claims….

TRY IT OUT ~ LEAD INTO THE EVIDENCE Evidence: 29% of mom’s said that they serve milk at dinner. Source: Harris Interactive Survey, January 2010 Background: Survey was conducted with 1,505 mothers. ____________________________________________________________________ 1.) In a 2010 survey of 1505 mothers, only 29% said that they serve milk at dinner. 2.) In a survey conducted by the Harris Interactive of 1505 mothers, only 29% said that they continue to serve milk with dinner. 3.) According to a Harris Interactive Survey conducted in January 2010, 29% of mothers surveyed said that they serve milk at dinner.

EFFECTIVE EVIDENCE ~ EXPLAINING EVIDENCE 4.) Good persuasive writers know that in order to convince others, you have to lead them to your point. To do this, good writers provide explanations of their evidence to explain what the evidence shows AND explain how the evidence supports their point. First, writers explain their evidenceThen, writers explain the “So what?!” This shows…This means… This reveals…This matters… This exemplifies…This is significant… This demonstrates…As a result… This proves…Consequently… This illustrates…Ultimately… This suggests… This supports…

TRY IT OUT! LEAD IN -> EXPLAIN -> SO WHAT?! In a Harris Interactive Survey of 1, 505 mothers, 29% of the participants said that they serve milk at dinner. Surprisingly, this data reveals that over half of the mothers surveyed do not serve milk at dinner. This is significant because without chocolate milk served in schools, students who choose not to drink the offered white milk may not have an opportunity to acquire the nutrients they need at home. Evidence: 29% of moms surveyed said that they serve milk at dinner. Source: Harris Interactive Survey, January 2010 Background: Survey was conducted with 1,505 mothers.
