Questions to ask myself  Who am I intentionally trying to reach, who is the audience?  What am I trying to accomplish?  Am I actively listening  Do I understand when/how to contact/connect with this specific group?  Can I help this audience – or can they help me?  Why do I think I can help this target audience?

How to Connect with our Diverse Communities  First steps –Relationships  Bridges out of Poverty – Generational poverty. How we survive ~ relationships  Gaining/Building Trust, what is your approach?  Activity - Sharing (record responses)  Listening, Listening, Listening

We have this great programming, they have this great need…I don’t understand why they don’t come running to my classes?  Lack of participation, Why?  Am I Not informed  Are they not informed, my communications are not being received, why?  What do I understand about their relationships and their family communication?

Building Relationships, Gaining Trust:  Building relationships can take time…Listening  Listening help us become more culturally competent…to individual communities.  Supporting the people involved will help build trust  This may not, at first, mean you program. It may involve things like helping the partnerships with events or fundraiser's within their organization or connecting them with other more necessary or addressing a more immediate need resource.

Barriers and Benefits in your communities  Another sticky note activity  Discuss at your table/group barriers write them on sticky notes and put them in the barriers board (i.e. I am not Hispanic)  Discuss at your table/group benefits write them on sticky notes and put them in the benefits board (i.e.the resource of the Mexican American Council in Saginaw)

Overcoming Barriers and Making the most of the Benefits  Intentionally seek to develop and work with the partnerships (Relationships)  Visit with the participants (Listen, Listen, Listen, build relationships)  Share any resources in the community (listen for needs, support relationships)  Use materials that are related to their language (listen to how you can be culturally competent)  Networking with other organizations or partnerships that might already have a connection (again, listen)
