Dark Matter & Energy By: Conwa and Luke

Dark Matter Matter in the universe that is invisible. It can be detected by its gravity. 25% of the universe is dark matter –Everything else makes up 5% of the universe –The other 70% is dark energy

Dark Matter Dark Matter was a theory that was though up by Fritz Zwicky in 1934 Hot Dark Matter (HDM) Cold Dark Matter (CDM) –Cold dark matter travels at slow speeds and have little pressure –Hot dark matter travels move more rapidly

Dark Matter Some scientist believe dark matter are massive objects, like black holes While others believe that dark matter is subatomic particles that rarely interact with ordinary matter. Zwicky was studying the motions of distant galaxies. He estimated the distance of the galaxies by their brightness. Then he used a different method and came up with an answer 400 times greater than his original estimate.

Dark Matter After this outcome lead to Zwicky realizing he had a “missing mass” problem. No one else tried to figure this out, until 1970s, when scientist realized that a mass that could not be seen was the best explanation. Also this would support theories regarding the structure of the universe.

Dark Energy Makes up 70% of the universe. Hypothetical form of energy that permeates all of space. –Increases the rate expansion of the universe. –There are two types of Dark Energy. Cosmological constant- constant type of energy filling space Scalar fields- Or an energy density that can vary in space and time
