Christmas Food nowadays & Energy + Nutrients Summary made by Martin Remmel, Tartu Tamme Gymnasium, Estonia

Menu for Christmas Eve: results of the group work Most common and traditional food was taken into account; We both discussed at home and layed on personal experiences; The opinion of majority of our Comenius group was written down.

Conclusions: Cristmas Eve food for nowadays people All together 3620 g = 3,62 kg = 3659 kcal, incl: Food: 2070 g = 2,07 kg; Drinks:1550 g = 1,55 kg We think this is not healthy! Taking into account that people “need to” eat a lot at that time, we suggest to prefere more fruits and to drink more water (which helps neutralize alcohol as well).

Conclusions: food energy and nutrients The highest energetical value has majonnaise; Other: flour, sugar. Most proteins can be found in fish; Other: pork, flour. Flour and sugar have the most rate of carbonhydrates; Other: different grains. Dip and fat have the highest rate of lipids;

Possible environmental impact, p.1 Fertilazers used in agriculture – water quality decrease; Air quality decrease, caused by transportation (by air, by sea, by land) and machinery; Whitening chemicals (in flour production process);

Possible environmental impact, p.2 Production of packages & packages as waste; Fridges used for keeping the food cold (freones, destruction of the ozone layer); Producing electricity: in Estonia specially oil-shale - a lot of waste remaining.
