Demystifying Re-usable Learning Objects Debora Barnes Beverly Leeds

Background E-Evolve HEFCE funded FDTL5 project on Employability REVOLVE JISC funded REProduce project on re-use of existing materials EVOLUTION JISC funded project on Open Educational Resources (Individual Strand)

OERs and RLOs Open Educational Resources are learning materials that are freely available for re- using, remixing and sharing – usually with a creative commons license. Re-usable Learning Objects are any digital resource that can be re-used to support learning

Characteristics of Re-usable Learning Objects Re-usable Customisable Applicable Stand-alone Sharable Durable Interoperable Accessible

E-Evolve RLOs E-Evolve RLOs were created by academics They had no specialist IT training Used Wimba Create and Adobe Presenter – how to edit, add a hyperlink to a Word document The creators were asked to keep resources and activities separate so can be customised at a later date

Materials Design Learning Activity Introduction And Learning Outcomes Tasks Resource

What next? All of the materials were packaged Only for UK HE institutions But had the potential to be made open and separated to make open RLOs This is where EVOLUTION came in

EVOLUTION’s work RLOs have been unpackaged They have been made available on two levels – learning activities and re-usable resources Re-usable materials are the raw materials eg mini lecture, worksheets Learning activities are lesson plans and this is where the potential for changing pedagogy comes in

Re-purposing Learning Objects Inform ApplyAssess Inform ApplyAssess Apply Assess Directive Enquiry Based Diagnostic Exploratory

Re-useable Learning Objects Learning Activity 1 Introduction And Learning Outcomes Tasks Mini Lecture Quiz Reading Mini-lecture Web link Learning Activity 2 Introduction And Learning Outcomes Tasks Different Pedagogies or create new activities

The resource

The repository The packaged materials are already in the repository Unpackaged materials and Raw materials will be available from here and in JORUM in April

Freely Available re-packaging software The raw materials can be used to make a RLO on freely available software So if users do not have Wimba Create/Adobe Presenter they can still download EVOLUTION are using the GLO 2.0 tool

Issues and Challenges Copyright IPR Size of raw data files means new server needed Downloaders using not re-purposing Currently doing a survey into this on what they are doing with them

Sustainability UCLAN is keeping the repository live for at least 2 years All materials are being uploaded into Jorum and will be there end of April 2010
