Welcome back, designers! First week of Term 1 = TODAY: Introduction to Area of Study 1: Drawing as a means of Communication Finishing off Mind Maps from Orientation week THIS WEEK: Introduction to Drawing Observation Drawing Tone, Texture, Form Holiday Homework Due on MONDAY.

Unit 1: Vis Com Design Outcomes this Semester OUTCOME 1: DRAWING AS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION OUTCOME 2: DESIGN ELEMENTS AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES OUTCOME 3: VISUAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT You need to satisfactorily pass all Outcomes to pass a Unit (Semester) of a subject.  Satisfactory completion of an Outcome includes: Over 40% in a school assessed coursework task - At least 90% attendance Complete at least 90% of short tasks, readings, homework, class work etc. - Ability to show key knowledge and skills through coursework

WHAT YOU WILL NEED... You will be required to organise and provide the following: Ring-binder folder and/or A4 plastic pocket book This is where all handouts, theory work, notes will be kept  A3 Folder and Plastic Pockets (“Folio”) This is where your drawings and visual tasks will be created. Pencil case with materials Greylead pencils, small set coloured pencils, highlighters, pens, ruler, eraser, sharpener, fine liners. AND BRING YOUR LAPTOP TO ALL CLASSES!

DRAWING IS THE BASIS OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION. IT IS NOT SOMETHING TO FEAR, AND IS A SKILL THAT CAN BE LEARNT – BUT IT TAKES PRACTICE. IT WILL BE OUR FIRST FOCUS – BECAUSE IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL IN THIS WHOLE SUBJECT!

UNIT ONE // VCD Outcome 1: Drawing as a means of communication On completion of this unit the student should be able to create drawings for different purposes using a range of drawing methods, media and materials. 

Drawing as a means of communication: Key Skills key design factors that contribute to the aesthetics, appearance and functions of objects/structures observational drawing methods for the purpose of showing form, proportion, surface textures and relationships between objects visualisation drawing methods for the purpose of making visible design ideas and concepts presentation drawing methods for the purpose of refining conceptual designs using manual and digital methods drawing methods to represent three-dimensional forms, such as paraline (isometric and planometric) and perspective (one and two point) rendering techniques for depicting the direction of light, shade and shadow and for representing surfaces, materials, texture and form manual and/or digital methods suitable for creating drawings a range of media and materials to support different drawing purposes and drawing methods techniques for generating and reflecting on ideas.

Assessment SAC: Folio of drawings Our focus will be on cups, mugs, glasses, tea cups, coffee cups, sippy cups.

Glossary of terms - EXPECTATIONS TERMS TO ADD During class add new terms to your workbook You are to start a digital glossary on your computer, saved in your student drive. Update this regularly as you learn new terms. Types of Drawing A refresher

Observation Drawings Freehand drawing that requires direct observation of the object or structure to represent form, proportion, materials and textures effectively. Observational drawing can communicate structural detail and function. Observational drawings may incorporate naturally observed perspective.

Visualisation Drawings Drawing from imagination supports the generation of ideas. These drawings are in the form of quick freehand sketches aimed at conceptualizing and communicating ideas. Drawings may be developed in two or three dimensions. They may also include explanatory sketches and diagrams.

Presentation Drawings Presentation drawings present design concepts and final design solutions. They are refined and finished drawings and may employ either manual or digital media applications. Methods of production may include perspective or paraline drawings (3D), and/or third- angle orthogonal projections (two-dimensional)
