Through this lecture students will be able to: Understand citation and referencing concepts Differentiate between referencing modules Be familiar with referencing tools Recognize and avoid plagiarism 3

What is Referencing Referencing is a standardized method of formatting the information sources you have used in your assignments or written work. Citation is marking the material when you use it in the paragraphs The purpose of referencing or citing : ▫Acknowledge and credit the source ▫Helping the reader to find more resources 4

What need to be referenced ? o Direct quotes o Statistics/Studies o Theories o Facts o Interpretations o Paraphrases 5

Referencing Modules: There are various referencing styles: ▫APA referencing style ▫Harvard ▫Chicago ▫IEEE Students may explore other referencing styles What referencing style student should use? 6

Why referencing is important shows respecting to academic writing standards shows respect for and acknowledges the work of other scholars (thereby avoiding plagiarism) provides evidence that you have read and considered the relevant literature allows validation and confirmation of sources used in your work, and gives your work credibility. 7

What is plagiarism ? It is the use of another person's work without full and clear referencing and acknowledgement According to the college regulations, a student will be penalized if plagiarism case found Referencing skills will help in avoiding plagiarism 8

Referencing tools There are various of citation tools that help in writing well-structured citation, however, some of them may not be accurate all the time. citation tools: Microsoft word 9

Exercise: After Demonstrating the three suggested tools for referencing and citation, take the students to the college library, ask them to collect 5 books about computer fundamentals and write their references using : ▫a APA referencing style ▫ help of any of the three tools they would prefer 10
