Childhood Immunizations Birth to age 2 22 vaccinations (Dtap, Hib, Pneumo, HepB, HepA, IPV, MMR, Varicella) 3 oral doses (Rotavirus) Kindergarten 4 vaccinations (Dtap, IPV, MMR, Varicella) 7 th grade 1 or more vaccinations (Dtap) (Does not include annual flu vaccinations)

Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis (Tdap) Tetanus (Td) Given as a childhood series, then a booster is required every 10 years May give booster early if there is a serious injury or risk of infection

Should I get Tdap or Td? Pregnant women are revaccinated with Tdap during pregnancy to prevent transmission of pertussis (whooping cough) to infants Grandparents, daycare workers, etc. should consider a booster with Tdap if caring for infants A small percentage of people have a serious reaction to pertussis vaccine and require Td

Zostavax (Shingles) One dose suggested after age 60 About 50% effective in preventing an episode of shingles (herpes zoster) infection Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the chicken pox virus that is dormant in your body Can cause painful, irritating rash almost anywhere on the body. Sometimes the rash causes long-term, severe pain

Zostavax (Shingles) Helpful hint: check with your insurance/Medicare before getting the vaccination, as there sometimes are payment or reimbursement issues

Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) Primary series given in childhood May be repeated in early adulthood with certain risk factors such as lung disease, diabetes, immune disorders A one-time vaccination, is suggested after age 65

Influenza (Flu) Seasonally given in fall of each year Recommended for all over 6 months of age Each year the flu vaccine is different – it is made up of three of four of the flu strains expected to be most prevalent – you need to be revaccinated every year

Influenza (Flu) Influenza/Flu is an upper respiratory illness Headache, fever, body aches, cough The “stomach flu” is not prevented by a flu shot – they are two different illnesses! You cannot get Influenza from the vaccination
