Key Vocabulary and Key People Key Terms The Treaty of Paris Republicanism Key People Elizabeth Freeman Richard Allen

A Final Farewell  After the War ended American troops replaced the British Troops  Washington Praised his soldiers for their endurance and perseverance  The Americans were able to beat the British even though they were greatly over matched

Four Reasons for an American victory  Better Leadership: British Generals were overconfident and Washington would learn for his mistakes and come up with a better strategy for victory  Foreign Aid: France and Spain lent America Money to help defeat a rival Britain  Knowledge of the Land: Great Britain could not control the Interior of the colonies and lost the war  Motivation: The Americans had MORE at stake including their lives, freedom, property, and honor

The Treaty of Paris  The United States gained their Independence  The Boundaries of the US would be Expanded  The US would get fishing rights in Canada’s Atlantic Coast  Each side would repay each other’s war Debt  Slaves would be returned to slave owners  Loyalist Property would be would be returned to its owners

BREAKDOWN  America Got favorable returns for their victory  America would not repay prewar debts or return Loyalist property  Britain would not return Slaves or give up their military outposts in the Great lakes Region

Gotta PAY the Man United States  25,700 Americans Died in the war with 8,200 wounded and 1,400 Missing compared to 10,000 British Deaths  Soldiers received little pay for their service but received land in the west that they later sell  The War Debt for the revolutionary war was over 27 million dollars to foreign countries British/Loyalists  100,000 Loyalists left their property and left the US  Many Loyalists went to Canada and established a new home and culture  Many Slaves and Native Americans lost their property and freedom

Free Enterprise….We’ll pick you Up  Competition creates IMPROVED goods and services at CHEAPER Prices  Property is owned by individuals and businesses  Desire for profit motivates Businesspeople  Individuals decide what to buy as well as what to manufacture and sell  The Government protects the rights above forces businesses to act fairly

More Freedom…More Problems  The new colonists would face the problem of replacing the government with republicanism  People would have to place the value of government ahead of their own interests  At First only FREE WHITE MEN would be allowed to run the government while women would teach the importance of government, honor, duty and willingness to sacrifice  After the War religious freedom was extended and taxes to support religion were abolished

More, More Freedom…More Problems  The Struggle of Slavery began to shape our nation with some states outlawing slavery and some slaves, like Elizabeth Freeman, suing for her freedom  Preacher Richard Allen would form the Free African Society to help Promote freedom  The BIGGEST Problem, however, would be how to form a government that would protect citizen rights and economic freedoms
