British Literature “It’s a Transition word Tuesday!” March 25, 2008 Mr. Houghteling

Agenda: 1. Bellringer – Thumb Rule practice. 2. Review last night’s English strategy- related homework assignment. 3. Transitions – Creating connections in your own writing and the ACT English section. 4. Transition Practice – Using those words that are unfamiliar to us.

Transitions: Transition questions fall under the category of Rhetorical Questions on the ACT English section; you should also use transitional words in your own writing as to support a clear argument. The transition words are used to connect one idea to the next, and they are typically words that you already use in your writing and speaking.

How to dominate transition questions: Most transitional words fall IN THE MIDDLE OF TWO DISTINCT IDEAS. You can call upon the handy Thumb Rule to find the correct transitional word. What to do…

Identifying transitional words: 1. Identify the relationship between the ideas being linked by the transitional word. ~The transitional word is non- essential, so you can cover it with your thumb to identify the relationship. 2. Identify the BEST transition for the relationship in question. USE POE!!!

For example: Funds provided by the Stafford program are not considered scholarships; so too, they are part of the extended student loan system. A. NO CHANGE B. in addition C. rather, D. moreover

For example: Funds provided by the Stafford program are not considered scholarships; so too, they are part of the extended student loan system. A. NO CHANGE – so too means also. NO. B. in addition – means also. NO. C. rather, - means as opposed to. YES. D. moreover – means in addition to. NO.

Homework: ~The easiest part of the transition-style questions is identifying the relationship between ideas. You put your thumb over the transition in question, and voila! ~The potentially challenging part is identifying which transition BEST fits the relationship in question. Therefore, we must review some of the lesser-known transitions. WRITE 10 sentences that utilize at least 10 transition words that you do not already know.
