Type 1 Diabetes Managing School Life

Myths and Legends… Its because you ate a lot of sweets as a child?” ‘’But you’re not THAT fat” “You can’t eat crisps or chocolate anymore”. “My grandad had diabetes and had to have his leg cut off” “Are you sure you should be eating that

A child with diabetes should have a healthcare plan Younger children should be supported and supervised when checking blood glucose levels, when checking and interpreting results, and when administering medications such as insulin School staff involved in direct assistance should be trained by an appropriate health care professional

Children and Young People with diabetes need to be allowed to eat regularly during the day. This may include eating snacks during class time or prior to exercise Access to blood glucose monitoring equipment, glucose tablets and/or a sugary drink will need to be available during physical activity All school staff should be aware of the possible symptoms that would demonstrate a hypoglycaemic reaction (hypo) for a child with diabetes Dealing with a diabetes emergency should be an integral part of the school’s emergency procedures and also relate specifically to the child’s individual health care plan

Challenges School Trips Exams Weather Illness

Remember… “Diabetics can do anything…except produce insulin!”
