Endocrine System

Today’s Agenda Return Tests Introduction to Hormone Unit Notes on hormones/glands Practice endocrine glands

Function of Endocrine System

Types of Glands Endocrine –Produces chemical substance and releases it across the surface of the gland. –AKA ductless glands –Examples: pituitary, adrenal, hypothalamus

Types of Glands Exocrine –Produces chemical substance and releases through a duct or pore –AKA glands with ducts –Examples: lacrimal, sudoriferous, sebaceous

What makes a hormone a hormone? 1. A chemical produced by an endocrine gland. 2. Secreted into and distributed by the bloodstream. 3. Received by target cells.

Example: ADH is secreted by pituitary gland and works to reduce the permeability of the collecting ducts.

Identify the gland, hormone, and target cells: Aldosterone is secreted by kidneys and acts to regulate sodium resorption by the nephron.
