What is a fairy tale? Begin with phrases like “Once upon a time…” and “Long ago…” Take place in faraway places Are often folktales that contain magic Often have royal characters such as kings and queens Rarely are about fairies Usually have young heroes and heroines whose virtues help them overcome an obstacle Use characters with unusual names Have a good character and a bad character

What is a fairy tale? (cont.) Have the good character pass several tests in order to overcome a problem Always see that the bad character loses and is punished for his deeds Sometimes allow characters to be transformed into animals Sometimes allow characters to come under a spell that only acts of kindness or love can reverse Use numbers such as three or seven Have happy endings: “happily ever after”
