Abiotic vs. Biotic Factors Abiotic: non-living factors Biotic: living factors AbioticBiotic Light, heat, minerals, oxygen, humidity, wind… Plants, fungi, animals, bacteria….
Add the biotic and abiotic factors in this picture in your table Every ecosystem contains biotic and abiotic factors

Abiotic Factors and Plant Growth Investigation Objective: The students will design their own investigation in attempt to test how (or if) a chosen abiotic factor affects the growth of radish seedlings Problem: How do abiotic factors affect plant growth?
Abiotic Factors and Plant Growth Procedure: Choose an abiotic factor to test on the growth of radish seedlings. Possible factors include: amount of sunlight, amount of water, temperature, soil type, or amount of fertilizer…etc Determine a way to vary the factor you have chosen. Be sure to include at least five different settings of your variable and to keep all other factors constant. Write about a procedure for your investigation using 6 plants in your experiment Hypothesize what you think your experimental results might be. Draw a picture to illustrate your possible findings.
Example Control: 21.1°C (room temperature) water Dependent Variable: Temperature of water (4.4°, 10°, 15.5, 26.6°, 32.2°) C Independent Variable: Growth of plant (mm) 21.1°C 4.4°C 10°C 15.5°C 26.6°C 32.2°C Room Temp
Analyze and Conclude Operational Definitions: On the basis of your procedure, how are you defining plant growth? Identify Variables: Independent variables: Levels of independent variables Dependent variables: Control: Constants: Conclude: Is your experiment a failure if your variable did not apparently affect the growth? Explain. Experimental design: What possible sources of error may have occurred in your experiment? What might they have occurred?
