Office of the Christian Teacher  Tuesday September 8-Last Week of Class  POWER PLAY ANSWERS ARE DUE

Question of the day  2: A soon to be first year teacher has a nose ring that has become very symbolic of positive changes in her life. It is discreet yet noticeable. Her principal wants her to remove it but she thinks it will help her identify with young parents. What should she do?  Or  The senior family life students from CUAA spent their last spring break together in Mexico. As part of the break each got a Cardinal tattoo on their bicep. Should the Pastor at your congregation know about this prior to your being hired? Should you wear clothing that visibly displays this wonderful reminder of your time at CUAA?  Tomorrow: One of your CUAA friends has posted some old college photos of you on their FACEBOOK page. They are from your 21st birthday celebration which was not one of your proudest life events. You are worried someone from your Youth Group will see them. Your CUAA Friends say lighten up, and quit worrying. Should you tell your Board Chair?

What matters most is how you see yourself!

Power Play Article  Could this ever happen in the LCMS?  What do you think about the article content?  Is there any advice for us?

Topic—Ethical Considerations

What is meant by ethics?  You have one minute to determine your course of action.

You attend the Sept. PCW conference in Lansing with your entire staff. It cost $90 per person for registration. Your old college roommate wants to skip the sessions and catch up on some liquid refreshment. What do you do? 1. Go With Him 2. Absolutely not, “Get behind me Satan.” 3. Agree to meet him at the bar later. 4. Invite him to my faculty party. 5. Other

The parents of one of your marginal students offers you free tickets to a fabulous play at the Fox Theater. Do you take them? 1. Yes 2. No 3. Abstain

Situation #3  You have a student who needs extra help after school. Do you charge the parents for your time?

You have a student who needs extra help after school. Do you charge the parents for your time? 1. Of Course 2. Never 3. It depends on what the parents rationale is! 4. It depends on how often it happens. 5. It depends on

Your old college roommate wants to join the congregation where you are family life director. They are a marvelous person but a marginal teacher. They want you to write a letter of recommendation. What do you do? 1. Never write it! 2. Instantly write it! 3. Call my mom! 4. Other

You receive a Call to another Lutheran School on August 5. It is very appealing and pays $5000 more. What do you do? 1. Take it because it pays more. 2. Decline it because of the impact on my congregation. 3. Prayerfully consider all Calls. 4. Other

A 22 year old first year family life director is dating an 18 year old senior from a neighboring youth group. She does not have him in her youth group so her ethics are not in question. Okay or not okay? Its okay because he is from a different church. 2. Its okay because she is on Roster. 3. Never, Are you kidding me! 4. Other

Ethics codes are Professional Expectations 2. Govern behavior 3. Found in many professions 4. Expectations for workers and organizations.

Ethics—Professional Expectations  People refrain from behaviors because  Contrary to religious beliefs  Illegal  Profession they represent  Can you think of a profession with ethical expectations?

Should professional schools teach ethics?  Why is the Michigan District the only of 35 with an Ethics document for workers?

Power Play  Could it happen in LCMS?  What could we learn? One of your greatest challenges: Working in the church, being spiritual and just religious!

NEA Preamble  What is the NEA motivation to be ethical?

Commitment to student!  Does the same motivation apply to a Lutheran teacher? How does #2 fit into a Lutheran School?  How could #7 be violated?  When are you required to disclose information?

Topic : Personal Relationships in Ministry and the Effective Teacher  The most important person in a school according to Dr. Hartung and our Baker Survey is ………………….  The impact of relationships is found by Dr. Hartung’s study to be ………

Public vs. Faith Based  Is there a different ethical expectation based on the type of school in which you teach?  You can legally do things you shouldn’t do? (Jurassic park could vs. should)  NEA vs. Lutheran Teacher Union  Should Lutheran PCW’s be politically vocal?

Relationship Ideas  Child vs. Class  The Over protective Parent  When should you discuss a child’s progress?  What keeps the faculty team running?  Principal-Philosophy-Personality Balance
