Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies ObjectivesObjectives  Obtain a graduate education  Service to the department, college and university  Enhance research infrastructure and capabilities, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in your field

Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies M.Sc. Degree  Plan I: 24 hrs of courses (thesis) 6 hrs Math, 12 hrs Major 6 hrs of research ME 599 Thesis (3-member faculty committee) 1 committee member from outside your dept 1-2 journal/conference papers  Plan II: 33 hrs of course (non-thesis) 6 hrs Math, 18 hrs Major Comprehensive exam given by committee

Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies Ph.D. Degree  48 hrs of courses (24 hrs Major, 12 hrs Minor, 12 Others-related Minor)  May transfer up to 24 hrs of courses  Preliminary exam and research proposal  5-member faculty committee (minimum)  2 committee members from outside the dept  24 hrs of research ME 699  Expected more than 3 journal/conference papers  Dissertation defense

Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies General guidelines/info  Find a faculty advisor as soon as possible. (Preferably by end of 1st semester or start of 2nd semester at the latest)  Research Areas:  Thermal-fluids  HVAC, Combustion, Alternative Fuels, Engine modeling and processes, CFD, Heat Transfer, Propulsion, Turbomachinery  Mechanical Systems  Controls, Machine Dynamics, Acoustics, Vibrations, Vehicle NVH, Machining, Electro-mechanical actuators, Biomechanics

Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies General guidelines/info  Submission of forms are grad student responsibility.  Find out the exact datelines and rules of engagement from the graduate school and department.  Don’t wait until the last minute to form a committee, and replace faculty (ASAP) who leaves the university. Update new committee members of your progress. This is grad student responsibility - not advisor.  Keep lab space/office clean and return all items borrowed to the original place.  Always keep notes/journal of your research work.

Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies GRA/GTA Appointments  Officially 20 hours per week of service.  Commitment include off-semester period  9-month appt. (8/16/Y1-5/15/Y2); 12-month appt.  GTA funding comes from the university (state).  Duties may include grading, lab supervision and sometimes lectures (need to pass the ELI evaluation test).  GRA funding comes from external sponsor or the university.  External sponsors - companies, research labs & agencies such as Ford, Caterpillar, Argonne, Army, NSF, et cetera.  GRA duties are determined by faculty advisor/supervisor per contractual agreement signed with the funding agency.  Ideal situation is to use this for thesis/dissertation.  Thesis/dissertation work can be different. (Ex: non-research type, confidentiality issue, interests, etc.)

Mechanical EngineeringGraduate Studies GRA/GTA Appointments  Whether or not the GRA work is used to satisfy degree requirements (theses/dissertations), students need to spend additional time on an on-going basis for research.  Make arrangement with faculty advisor or supervisor before taking time off (vacation).  Typically some time off is allowed. Check with your faculty advisor/supervisor for guidelines.  No stipend provided during the period of extended continuous time off (for example if you are out for 1 month)  Continuation of funding depends on satisfactory progress and availability of funds.
