What is Fossil? Fossils are traces or remains of living things from long ago. Fossils can be mineralized bones, teeth, shells, wood, or actual unaltered.

How do Fossils Form? Fossil formation video: outu.be Body or bones of the organism are replaced by minerals

Types of Fossils Mold fossils- a fossilized impression made in the substrate (a negative image of the organism) Cast fossils- formed when a mold is filled in Trace fossils- fossils of nests, poops, footprints, etc True form fossils- fossils of the actual organism

How Old Is A Fossil: Carbon Dating

Dating A Fossil 1) Organism dies and stops taking in new carbon 2) Ratio of Carbon 14 and Carbon 12 is the same in ALL living creatures at the moment of death 3) Carbon 14 decays and is not replaced while the amount of Carbon 12 remains constant 4) The half-life of Carbon 14 is 5,700 years 5) Comparing the ratio of Carbon 14 to Carbon 12 in a fossil to the ratio of Carbon 14 and Carbon 12 in a living organism makes it possible to determine how old the fossil is

Strata A layer of sedimentary rock or soil (remember the dump…) Each strata has characteristics that distinguish it from other layers Location of each layer determines its relative age
